Winter Walk: Mylor, Flushing and the Carrick Roads

A couple of weeks ago, we checked out a new circular walk from one of my many Cornwall walking books. Although we have been to Mylor before, we haven’t done this particular walk, or seen some of the breathtaking views across the Carrick Roads, towards Falmouth and over to the Roseland Peninsula.

We parked in the car park in Mylor Churchtown and headed towards the beach. Of course, we couldn’t start the walk immediately because Blue wanted to explore the sand and launch himself into the water. We had fun watching him splash about, strolling up and down the beach for a while before we began the circular walk.

The coastal path which makes up the first part of the walk runs parallel to the beach, until you reach a stile, which leads you through a field. We were walking in the afternoon in February and it was lovely to feel the warmth of the sun on our faces, although the air was still very cold.

Not only is our dog, Blue, absolutely nuts for swimming on a winter’s day, he then reaffirms his madness by sprinting around us in circles, like a badly-trained sheep dog, barking and generally causing a scene. Well, they do say all collies are a bit mad…

After walking through a couple of fields and climbing over another stile, the pathway began to curve around to the right, with glorious views appearing in every direction.

Over to the left, we could see St Mawes Castle and St Anthony Lighthouse on the Roseland Peninsula, on the opposite side of the Carrick Roads. Straight ahead, we began to see glimpses of Falmouth docks.

As the pathway continued to bear round to the right, a gorgeous outlook of Falmouth town came into view. I have always loved Falmouth, but it was really refreshing to see it from a different angle.

We enjoyed views of Kilnquay woodland, followed by glimpses of some rather expensive-looking houses, overlooking the Carrick Roads, as we gradually descended towards the coastal village of Flushing. I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never been to this village before, but it’s very picturesque and has a few pubs dotted around.

We stopped to refuel with a cider and a packet of crisps, before continuing the walk. The route back to Mylor was more inland; we walked across various fields, through woodland and then got a bit lost with directions as the afternoon light was fading!

After walking half way to Mylor Bridge, we realised we needed to back-track to head in the right direction for Mylor Churchtown where the car was parked. It’s all part of the adventure, isn’t it?!

This stunning circular walk was about five miles in total. Not only did I get to visit Flushing for the first time, I enjoyed the views of Falmouth town and docks, as well as the castles and lighthouses of the Roseland, from an angle I’d never viewed them from before.

Despite getting lost, it’s still one of my favourite walks that I’ve been on recently. Have you been on any good walks this year?
